Backyard Habitat Update

Today is the first day of Spring and with Charleston’s peak bloom season upon us, now is the perfect time for an update on our Backyard Habitat!

Since its inception in spring 2015, the Backyard Habitat has slowly become a refuge for many local plant and animal species. As you can see in the picture to the right, we have had several notable residents undergo metamorphosis.

Wrapped in a chrysalis, the situation looks relatively calm and uneventful on the outside. However, on the inside, the caterpillar is experiencing a radical transformation. When it’s finished, it will emerge as the well-known and majestic Monarch Butterfly.

We are so excited that our habitat has already become a home!

Kristen Colvin, our horticulturist, was the driving force in the creation of the Backyard Habitat. She strove to meet the National Wildlife Federation’s certification requirements including the four elements (food, water, cover, and a place to raise young) needed for wildlife to thrive. Her efforts paid off: we are officially a Certified Backyard Habitat!

Stop by our Backyard Habitat and gain inspiration for your very own local wildlife preserve!
