High School Intern Program

High School Interns on a field tripThe South Carolina Aquarium High School Internship Program gives 11th grade students in the Charleston area who qualify for free or reduced school lunch the opportunity to become paid interns at the South Carolina Aquarium. As part of the program, students will attend a training class where they will learn about Aquarium animals and ocean science, develop career and team-building skills and participate in field trips. At the end of the class, ten students will be chosen as paid interns, working with marine educators and marine biologists through the summer.


Requirements
All applicants must:

  • Currently be an 11th grade student.
  • Have a strong interest in animals and the environment.
  • Have written recommendations from two teachers. One must be a science teacher.
  • Qualify for free or reduced school lunch.
After receiving an application and two teacher recommendations, the Aquarium staff will contact the applicant to set up an interview. Applicants who are accepted will participate in a training classes at the Aquarium that will begin in January and end in April. Classes will meet once a month on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Participants will be evaluated on the interest, commitment and progress shown during the training classes. In April, participants will be interviewed again by the Aquarium staff. Based on these evaluations, ten participants will be chosen for paid internships with the education staff. Internships will be 20 hours a week, $7.00 an hour, and will last for eight weeks during the months of June and July.

  1. Applicants must complete the application him/herself.

  3. All application materials must be completed and sent to the Aquarium by November 16, 2007.
  4. Interviews will be scheduled for those applicants who best meet the criteria listed under "Requirements" above.
