From divers to Aquarium mascots, the South Carolina Aquarium’s Volunteer Program is comprised of hundreds of diverse, enthusiastic individuals who serve in a variety of positions and departments. Volunteers have the opportunity to interact with hundreds of visitors each day, reach into the discovery tank, assist visitors with aquatic animals or serve as an Aquarium Ambassador at a community event. Enthusiastic youth volunteers, ages 16 and older and interested in marine biology can volunteer as exhibit guides. These youth volunteers have the opportunity to work in the discovery lab and at interpretive carts and will learn more about marine biology as they engage Aquarium guests.

The Fourth Annual South Carolina Aquarium Environmental Stewardship Awards Gala will take place outside the Aquarium at Liberty Square and will include dinner, dancing and an awards presentation. The South Carolina Aquarium will recognize exceptional people and organizations who demonstrate the kind of dedication to protecting our precious and natural resources that we all admire through the presentation of three awards: a Legacy Award, Achievement Award, Leadership Award. This year's recipients are: the Legacy Award: Former Vice President Al Gore; the Achievement Award: Charleston Battery; and the Leadership Award: Dr. Emory Campbell. Past recipients of the Environmental Stewardship Awards include: environmentalists Alexandra Cousteau and Philippe Cousteau, Jr., Charles Lane, MWV (MeadWestvaco), legendary South Carolina Senator Ernest F. Hollings and founding member of the Aquarium’s Board of Directors Mrs. Ernest F. Hollings, sweetgrass basket maker Mary Jackson, the Mepkin Abbey monastery, author Pat Conroy, biologist Sally Murphy, and the Post and Courier. The Environmental Stewardship Awards Gala is a black tie affair.

Volunteers have the opportunity to interact with hundreds of visitors each day, reach into the discovery tank, assist visitors with aquatic animals or serve as an Aquarium Ambassador at a community event. Enthusiastic youth volunteers, ages 16 and older and interested in marine biology can volunteer as exhibit guides. These youth volunteers have the opportunity to work in the discovery lab and at interpretive carts and will learn more about marine biology as they engage Aquarium guests.

Explore your natural environment and collect a cool natural artifact or beach find such as fossils, shark teeth, shells, rocks and more. Learn more about your artifact and download the O’Fishal Trading Post Collector Record from http://www.scaquarium.org/kids/fun.html. Bring your artifact and record into the Aquarium to interact with Educators and earn points towards trading in your artifact for one from the Aquarium’s collection.
