Around the world sea turtles have been used for food, tools and decorative items for centuries. This use has had a negative impact on sea turtles and today they may not survive if we do not act to help them.

Of the five types of sea turtles found in the Southeastern Atlantic, all of them are either threatened or endangered. There are many causes for the sea turtle population decline such as:

- loss of habitat, injuries
- injuries due to boating accidents, getting caught in fishing lines and nets
- ingestion of harmful materials, such as plastic bags mistaken for jellyfish
- beach erosion destroying established nesting grounds

Scientists are continually researching ways to help protect and save these amazing creatures, and each of us can play a significant role as well.

You can help protect these amazing animals...

  • Continue to support organizations like the South Carolina Aquarium by being a member, donor or volunteer.
  • Familiarize yourself with issues surrounding sea turtles and help educate others.
  • During nesting season, minimize beachfront lighting and avoid using flashlights on the beach.
  • Remove recreational equipment from the beach overnight, leave any tracks left by turtles undisturbed and don’t construct beach campfires.
  • All year long, properly dispose of your garbage so that turtles don’t mistake plastic bags and Styrofoam for food.
  • Avoid using helium balloons since turtles can eat them and die.
  • And exercise boater safety – always stay alert and avoid sea turtles and their important sea grass habitat.
