Come Fingers to Fins with Sharks!
Touch sharks and rays at your fingertips as you experience Shark Shallows. The first of its kind in the region, this exhibit enables you to reach out and feel the skin of bonnethead sharks, cownose rays and southern stingrays.
Overlooking the Charleston Harbor from the Riverside Terrace, Shark Shallows is the largest enhancement to the guest experience since the Aquarium opened its doors in 2000. Shark Shallows’ impressive 20,000-gallon touch tank features a deep area where the animals can swim uninterrupted and a shallow area where guests can discover how sharks and rays feel.
Sponsored in part by The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, MWV, Peninsula Grill and Hank’s Seafood Restaurant.
Ambassadors for Conservation
Years of negative media portrayals and false representations have led people to fear sharks, imagining them as vicious killers. In reality, most sharks, including the species in Shark Shallows, have no interest in harming humans in the wild. Humans are much more threatening to sharks.
In some parts of the world, sharks are severely overfished, contributing to the decline of shark species.
The sharks and rays that inhabit Shark Shallows are ambassadors for their species, teaching visitors about the protection of sharks and rays in the wild. Once you get the chance to touch these sharks, you too may feel the call to advocate for the conservation of these and other ocean creatures.
Get ready to come closer than ever before to these amazing animals!
Meet Miles and Bob
Share in the excitement with our fun-loving new mascots, Miles and Bob. These two best friends couldn’t be more thrilled to play a game of “shark tag!” The intrepid young explorer and his stuffed shark enjoy make-believe escapades below the ocean’s surface, and Shark Shallows helps bring their adventures to life. Keep an eye out for this mischievous pair.
