The exhibit featuring piranha, a lesser anteater, four-eye fish, an anaconda, poison dart frogs and a variety of other exotic South American animals, is being taken down as preparations begin for a new major exhibit, Camp Carolina.
The animals displayed in the Secrets of the Amazon exhibit are being relocated the first week of January 2008 to other zoos and aquariums, and in some cases, back to their original owners.
For more detailed information on where and when the animals are being relocated, please feel free to refere to our press release.
Animal Fun Facts
Featured Animal: Tamandua (Lesser Anteater)
Tamanduas are a small species of anteater that live in trees and can eat over 10,000 ants and termites a day with their ten-inch long, sticky tongues.
Featured Animal: Anaconda
Anacondas are not the longest snake in the world, but they are the largest, weighing up to 550 pounds, as much as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Featured Animal: Poison dart frog
Poison dart frogs get their poison from the food they eat. In the wild, they eat insects that have eaten poisonous plants. In captivity, they do not eat poisonous insects, so they lose their toxicity.
Featured Animal: Four eye fish
The four eye fishes’ eyes allow them to see above and below the water simultaneously, so they can look out for food below and predators above.
