A saltmarsh food chain starts with the sun as it shines down on the marsh. Plants in the marsh use the sun's light to make food for themselves. When the plants die and fall to the mud, they become food for fiddler crabs. Blue crabs then enter the picture as predators of fiddler crabs. Blue crabs are then prey to great blue herons and even people. Have you ever eaten blue crabs? Learn more about food chains in South Carolina by trying the Figure out the Food Chain Activity.
