Now through August 2- Wild Carolina: The Art of Scott Penegar

Experience wildlife from a new vantage point as you view the inspired works of renowned local artist Scott Penegar. Influenced by his passion for the sea, Penegar captures moments in nature through his detailed sculpture and bronze casting art. As a fisherman, former exhibit designer for the North Carolina Aquarium and avid traveler who has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice, Penegar presents a unique and intimate perspective of nature. May 23- World Turtle Day

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Love turtles? We do! Pay homage to these diverse and amazing reptiles on World Turtle Day®. Join us for special turtle-themed activities including an art station, turtle education stations and visits with turtle patrol teams throughout South Carolina. These activities are included with membership or admission.

Take in a one-of-a-kind experience on this day by touring the Sea Turtle Hospital, the only sea turtle rescue facility in our state, at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. Tours are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Call (843) 577-FISH (3474) to reserve your spot!

May 26- Folly Beach Sweep

6 p.m., 6th Street West, Folly Beach
Help us create a cleaner habitat for shorebirds, sea creatures and our fellow beachgoers! Aquarium staff, members and friends will meet on Folly Beach at 6th Street West to collect trash and debris from the beach. If you have reusable work gloves, please bring them. Free parking is available along the beach side of West Ashley Avenue; park with all tires completely off the pavement. For more information, call (843) 577-FISH (3474).

May 30- Call of the Ancient Mariner Release Party

4 p.m. Terrace Theatre
Call of the Ancient Mariner, a new film by director David Weintraub, tells the story of man’s love for sea turtles. The award-winning film features footage shot in the Lowcountry and at South Carolina Aquarium sea turtle beach releases. The film showing will be followed by a release party featuring music, light refreshments and merchandise for sale. The film’s director will sign copies of the DVD and discuss the film. A portion of proceeds from T-shirt sales will benefit the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Hospital Expansion. Tickets will be available soon online or by calling (843) 762-4247.

June 6- Paddle for Sea Turtles with Nature Adventures Outfitters (Members Only)

1 – 4 p.m.
Along with a Professional Naturalist Guide, explore the beautiful ocean estuaries of Edisto Island and paddle into Big Bay Creek. Learn all about sea turtle nests and help the South Carolina Aquarium and Nature Adventures save our state reptile. You might even see a turtle along the way! Ages 4 and up. $50 for ages 13 and over; $30 for ages 12 and under. An additional fee of $5 per car is required to enter the state park. Register online or call (843) 568-3222.

June 6 and 7- Edisto River Overnight Expedition with NAO (Members Only)

Go with the flow on the longest free-flowing blackwater river east of the Mississippi. Under the direction of a Professional Naturalist Guide, enjoy a leisurely paddle that twists and turns through a less-developed part of the Edisto and stop at the privately-owned “Nature Adventures Outpost” to camp overnight. On day two, journey into the ACE Basin, where you’ll see the dynamics of the river change to reflect the rice era, with thousands of acres of abandoned rice fields full of wetland wildflowers. You’ll find fossil beds along the way, and your Professional Naturalist Guide will help identify them as you swim and play along the sandbars and at Nature Adventures Outfitters’ base camp. You’ll also learn about the relationship of these fossilized animals to those housed at the Aquarium. Ages 10 and up. $300 for ages 13 and over; $200 for ages 12 and under. June 8- World Oceans Day

Everyone’s health depends on a clean, productive ocean. Inspired by this year’s theme of “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet,” we’ll focus on what actions each of us can take to protect the ocean and safeguard vulnerable communities and places. Join us for special activities at the Aquarium to promote a healthy ocean future.

June 22- Seining on Sullivan’s Island (Members Only) – SOLD OUT

6 – 7:30 p.m.
A member favorite! Assist Aquarium staff as we search the sand and water for aquatic creatures. We’ll drag a seine through the surf to find fish, crabs and maybe even a small shark. Educators will give you a glimpse into the fascinating lives of fish, mollusks and other beach dwellers as we walk along. Tickets are $10 each, and reservations are required.
