This little Kemp's ridley was caught by a couple of folks fishing with hook and line at the jetties. Unfortunately, the turtle swallowed the hook. The fishermen brought the turtle to the Turtle Hospital so that Aquarium staff could retrieve the hook. If the turtle were to be released with the hook embedded in the esophogus, it would likely get infected and the turtle could possibly die. Thanks for making the right call!
"Little Jetty" was taken to Birds and Exotics Vet Clinic for radiographs and surgery. Despite the fact that the hook was DEEPLY embedded in the esophogus, the surgery was successful.
The turtle seems to be doing well after surgery. Thanks to all who were involved in its rescue (Rexanna), surgery (Dr. Biascoechea) and treatment (Dr. Boylan, Justin and Katie)!
Release is being planned for September 13 at 10:30am - Isle of Palms County Park. Please join us!
