Ring-tailed Lemur
Lemur catta
  • Physical description: roughly 18 inches tall with 13 black and white alternating rings on their tails
  • Life span: Can live to 20-25 years
  • Diet: Opportunistic omnivores, lemurs mostly eat leaves, flowers, stems and fruit, but will snatch up a spider or insect when spotted.
  • Fact: Unlike most lemurs, ring-tails spend roughly half of their time on the ground where they walk on all fours.

Northern Spider Tortoise
Pyxis arachnoides brygooi
  • Physical description: gets its name from the spider-like pattern on its carapace (shell); reaches about a maximum of 6 inches in length
  • Life span: Can live to 50-70 years
  • Diet: Feeds on grasses, roots of succulents, insects and larvae
  • Fact: The Northern spider tortoise is the smallest of its genus

Baobab Tree
Adansonia grandidieri
  • Physical description: huge statuesque, cylindrical trunk, with short, thick, branches that are bare most of the year.
  • Life span: Live to around 800 years old
  • Flower: Oval flower buds on a short upright stalk which are pollinated by several species fruit bats and lemurs
  • Fact: Sometimes called the “Tree of Life” because it is a constant source of water for animals and people
