
Leave the brooms behind as you head out to your local beach for the South Carolina Aquariums Beach Sweep. Each year volunteers, SC Sea Grant Consortium and the Department of Natural Re  sources participate in the Ocean Conservancy National Beach sweep, in an effort to remove debris from the beaches and banks of the river. Help out by picking up beach equipment and trash after a long day of soaking up the sun.

The South Carolina Aquarium is part of one of the largest international collaborative efforts to support ocean conservation. The Ocean project provides research based conservation messages, programs and activities to hundreds of zoos, aquariums and museums in order to promote ocean conservancy. Through their efforts they have managed to reach over 200 million people to help create awareness among the public and change the attitudes and behaviors for ocean conservation.

The Aquarium has partnered with the Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary to promote  the National Marine Sanctuary Program, and working with the League of Women's Voter and South Carolina Coastal Conservation League, has hosted public meetings on marine sanctuaries and mercury levels in fish.
